Background

The Cottage was formed by a small group of working parents who saw the need in the community for a childcare facility back in the mid-late 80’s.  Leasing the original house on 63 Esplanade, the inside and outside of the building was worked on tirelessly by parents, volunteers and the community.  Over the years the original ‘Cottage’ house has been extended and is what is now known as our Preschool area.

In 2003, what we now know as the Early Learners area and Reception was completed after work had begun in 2002, only to be targeted by arsonists, sadly destroying the new extension half way through its construction.

Te Kuiti Community Childcare Centre operates as an incorporated society known as ‘The Cottage’.  An executive committee of elected parents provides overall governance and strategic direction for the centre, with the daily running of the centre the responsibility of the Licensee Manager.  We also have a voluntary Parent Support Group (PSG) who raise funds with the objective to purchasing resources for the benefit of the children to enhance the learning environment.

Teachers and tamariki stand together daily to give thanks for their food before each meal time.  Recited in English, Maori and Sign Language, it is a cultural practice, in recognition of Aotearoa, New Zealand’s official languages.
